Rebuild Your Pre-Holiday Fitness

7.09.22 by Thomas Millar

September is traditionally the month when we make things happen. The summer holidays were a great time to relax and enjoy ourselves, so like most people, your physical activity was probably minimal and your healthy eating disappeared in the face of BBQs and ice creams, ice-cold beers and summer cocktails. Which means that if you want to rebuild your pre-holiday fitness, now’s the time to begin.

If you’re worried that you might be the only one who’s let their overall fitness drop, don’t, because you’re not! The 2022 Nuffield Health Healthier Nation Index revealed that 37% of women said there has been a drop in their physical health over the last 12 months, and 47% did no vigorous exercise at all.

The good news is that any fitness you’ve lost can be regained along with a healthy lifestyle. If going straight back to working out at the gym sounds a bit daunting, don’t worry. There are plenty of ways of easing yourself back into fitness. Taking care of yourself is more important than going overboard at the gym. And it may well be that the new fitness routine you choose is enough to get you back into shape and keeping fit without the need to sign up for boot camps, join a gym or run marathons.

How Reformer Pilates can help you get back into shape

There are many benefits to doing Reformer Pilates, including improving your balance, flexibility, core strength and muscle strength. The beauty of it is that you can adapt the bed to suit your body’s capabilities and fitness levels at your own pace. For every exercise you do, you’ll be shown different ways of achieving the same benefit, so if you have an injury or want to start off gently, you’ll always have a safe way of pushing yourself the right amount. This means that in group sessions, all our exercises can be done by beginners and the more experienced alike.

If you haven’t been exercising because of an injury, then Reformer Pilates is ideal. It was originally designed as a way of giving hospital patients physiotherapy to tone their muscles and help them regain their fitness even when they were still confined to bed. This means that you’re fully supported as you work out, allowing you to push yourself physically without the worry of aggravating any pain or inflammation in the tissue. At the beginning of each session, let your instructor know about your injury and they will be more than happy to show you different ways of doing any exercises that may affect the area.

Rebuilding your fitness must be enjoyable

If you don’t enjoy doing an exercise, then it doesn’t matter how effective it is, you won’t do it! Our Reformer Pilates sessions are designed to be fun in order to encourage you to come back enough times to make a real difference. That’s why we developed what we call our Five Principles:

Enjoyable – we put a lot of effort into planning our exercises in order to make our classes fun and enjoyable so you’ll want to come back again and again.

Challenge – when you challenge yourself, you’ll be inspired to progress a little further every time you come to a session. The more progress you make, the more enjoyable getting fit becomes.

Confidence – the more you progress, the more confident you become in your own abilities. But we also want you to be confident in us, so every Chilli Pilates instructor has either a Personal Training qualification or a Therapy qualification and is hugely knowledgeable about anatomy and exercise.

Flow – each session is designed so that each exercise moves seamlessly into the next. This allows us to get a lot into one class, which gives you a real sense of achievement at the end.

Progressive – no matter what your current fitness levels, every exercise will challenge you enough to progress at your own pace. And the more you do, the more likely it is that you’ll recover faster from your workouts, encouraging you to push yourself a bit more every time.
