The Importance of Pilates for Desk Workers

The Importance of Pilates for Desk Workers

If you have an office job, you’ll know that sitting at a desk hunched over a computer for eight hours is not the best way to look after your posture. After a day of sitting at a desk, many office workers have aches and pains in their shoulders and backs. Others get headaches.

Yet it’s all too easy to sit at your desk for long periods. It’s difficult to take regular breaks when you have a deadline or get so engrossed in your work you lose all track of time. And you rarely think about the way you’re sitting, let alone adjust your posture. That’s why your back muscles start aching, your spine hunches over and you put too much strain on your shoulders. Luckily there are steps you can take to help you improve your posture overall that will help you sit more comfortably at your desk.

How Pilates can help desk workers

Sitting at your desk and working on a computer screen can put a lot of stress on the muscles that create good posture and stability. The small, precise movements you make when doing Pilates exercises are designed to stretch your muscles and help alleviate aches and pains. All Pilates exercises are designed to improve your posture by realigning the body and working on neglected muscles. You’ll also build up your core strength and stability at the same time as improving flexibility. In addition, your Pilates tutor will check your posture as you do the exercises and correct it if necessary, giving you peace of mind that you will get the most out of your sessions.

How Reformer Pilates can help

Reformer Pilates is particularly effective when it comes to encouraging good posture. It helps you develop strength evenly throughout your body and ensures all your muscles are being used properly. It helps you keep your spine straight at the same time as strengthening the core muscles around your trunk which support good posture.

Great for those with aches and pains caused by poor posture

Reformer Pilates is not a weight-bearing activity, so if you have existing back pain from sitting at your desk for long periods, it will not make your pain any worse. That means you don’t have to wait until your injury is better before starting the exercises. Reformer Pilates was originally developed as a form of physiotherapy for hospital patients who’d been confined to bed, making it a perfect exercise for people with muscle problems – though you must always tell your instructor about any injuries or painful areas so they can adjust your exercises accordingly.

Additional benefits of Reformer Pilates that will help you work better in the office

Any form of exercise is beneficial for the whole self, not just the body, and Reformer Pilates is no exception. The physical exercises combined with the breathing techniques will release endorphins that will help to reduce stress and boost your mood. Doing regular exercise will also help you sleep better, which in turn will help your concentration and motivation.
