If you’re over 60 and are looking for a low impact form of exercise with great results, take a closer look at Reformer Bed Pilates. Reformer is the perfect type of Pilates for beginners over 60 as it is very supportive, helping to strengthen your muscles, protect your joints and improve your posture.

Before we tell you what to expect at Reformer Bed Pilates sessions, let’s look at why it’s a good idea to try it.

Benefits Of Reformer Bed Pilates For The Over-60s

1. Helps Prevent Injury

We all know that as your body ages it doesn’t work as well as it used to. Most people will experience aches and stiffness at some point. Our sedentary, computer-based lifestyle doesn’t help, leading to posture problems which can exacerbate age-related issues. Reformer Bed Pilates builds up your muscles, improves your posture and increases general fitness levels, all of which are vital to help you protect your body from injury.

2. Helps Recovery From Injury

If you have already suffered an injury, taking part in a Reformer Bed Pilates session will be hugely beneficial to your recovery, even if you have never done Pilates before. The reformer bed provides your body with lots of support, and the small-sized classes allow instructors to spend more time with you, working on ways of strengthening the muscles around the injury site. Many of the instructors at Chilli Pilates are also qualified in sports therapy and sports massage, which means you’ll be getting the benefit of specialist knowledge and experience as part of your regular sessions.

3. Benefits For Post-Menopausal Women

Reformer Bed Pilates helps relieve ongoing symptoms or effects of menopause. In addition to improving balance and flexibility, it is a great way to relax and relieve stress, leading to better quality sleep and improved concentration and memory!

What To Expect At A Reformer Bed Pilates Class

When you book your first session, we’ll send you a short video explaining more about the reformer bed so you can familiarise yourself with it in advance. We will also ask you to complete a confidential medical questionnaire so we’ll know about any health conditions we’ll need to take into account.

The main thing to remember is to tell your instructor if you think you’ll have trouble doing any of the exercises in the class or have problems with pain. They will show you alternative exercises that you will be able to do more comfortably.

You don’t need special clothing – in fact, the only rule we have is that everyone must wear socks. Click here to read our blog on the best clothing to wear for your Reformer Bed Pilates session.

When you arrive at your session, let your instructor know that this is your first session. They will be happy to explain the reformer bed to you so you understand how to use it. They will also pay greater attention to you during the class to ensure you are using the equipment properly and are comfortable with the moves.

The instructor may want to put their hands on you to reposition you or lengthen a stretch. If you are uncomfortable with this, please let them know and they will respect your wishes.

Rehab & Fundamentals Classes

If you are concerned about not being able to keep up during a session, it would be a good idea to begin at one of our Rehab & Fundamentals sessions. In these sessions, you will be doing the same exercises but at a slower pace, enabling you to familiarise yourself with the moves. These sessions are also aimed at people with chronic illness or pain, providing a much gentler way of toning the body.

You may be surprised by how many members over the age of 60 we have. Many of our older members report it has given them greater flexibility, eased stiffness, helped with back pain, and improved their overall fitness. This enables them to enjoy a healthier lifestyle, as well as giving them enough fitness to be able to play with their grandchildren… and also keep up with them!
